When you arrive in Funchal, you're struck by its vastness. Homes upon homes rise from the sea, blanketing the entire natural amphitheater that is Funchal. It serves as the primary commercial, tourist, and cultural hub of Madeira Island. The city's old town, La Zona Velha, still retains a lively local atmosphere and is the most fashionable spot on the island.
