Cittadella Italy

Cittadella, a wonderful walled town of medieval origin located a few kms. from other walled towns of the Veneto like Bassano del Grappa, Marostica, Asolo or Castelfranco Veneto. The foundation of the town goes back to 1220, when the Municipality of Padua decided to create from the beginning, in the sector of the Venetian plain, a fortified place to protect the confines of its county against the cities of Treviso and Vicenza and, in addition to control the local "caciques", to initiate a policy of agrarian colonization. However, the new settlement is born in an area known since ancient times: if, on the one hand, there are almost no more paleovénetos materials, on the other hand the Roman presence has been proven since the 2nd century BC. In 148 a.C. Postumia is built, a road artery that crosses all of northern Italy linking Genova with Aquilieia. At the end of the Roman domination the territory is, in all likelihood, under the control of the Longobards although very few are the high-medieval sources; very likely there is a general depopulation and the environment becomes feral, while feudal powers develop around small centers such as Onara, Fontaniva, Tombolo, Galliera.
