Caldes de Malavella Spain

Caldes de Malavella is a Spanish municipality in the La Selva region in the province of Gerona, Catalonia. Remains of the ancient Roman term of Aquae Calidae are preserved, consisting of a thermal pool that is surrounded by rooms for the performance of oil-based treatments. The findings found during the excavations in the area are exhibited in the Museum of Archeology of Catalonia, located in Gerona. Among the pieces on display there is a dog's head made of bronze as well as coins corresponding to various periods. The parish church of Sant Esteve is of Romanesque origin, built at the end of the 11th century, although it has been greatly modified. It was one of the possessions of the monastery of Sant Salvador de Breda. It has a basilica plan and three apses decorated with Lombard arches. The portal is Renaissance and the bell tower has a square base. In Sant Maurici there are the remains of the old castle of Malavella. According to a legend in this fortress, cited in documents from 1057, there lived a mala vella (which in Catalan means bad old woman), which gave rise to the town's place name. Taking advantage of the castle stones, a chapel dedicated to Sant Maurici was built. In the Sant Grau area there are the remains of the Caldas castle, documented for the first time in 1362. It was part of the Llagostera barony and was demolished in the 19th century. Caldas de Malavella celebrates its great festival on the first weekend of August, and the Water Fair on the first weekend of October. Additionally, each summer there are dramatized visits, and periodically markets and thematic fairs.
