Über das Reiseziel

Lesbos ist eine griechische Insel, die Teil einer breiten Inselgruppe vor der Küste der Türkei (in der Ägäis) ist. Ihre Hauptstadt ist Mytilini. Zusammen mit einigen kleineren Inseln bildet sie die periphere Einheit von Lesbos. Sie ist berühmt als Geburtsort von Sappho, der Dichterin der Antike, deren Gedichte ihre leidenschaftliche Liebe zu ihren Gefährtinnen beschrieben und den modernen Begriff des Lesbentums hervorbrachten. Darüber hinaus ist das Adjektiv auf Spanisch für die Inselbewohner lesbisch und lesbia. Es ist die drittgrößte Insel Griechenlands (Kreta und Euböa sind größer) und die achte im Mittelmeer (nach Zypern, Korsika, Sizilien, Sardinien, Mallorca und den beiden griechischen Inseln, die sie übertreffen), mit einer Fläche von 1.630 Quadratkilometern und 320 Kilometern Küstenlinie. Die Bevölkerung beträgt etwa hunderttausend Einwohner, von denen mehr als ein Drittel in der Hauptstadt Mytilini leben. Abgesehen von der Hauptstadt sind die größten Städte Kalloni, Gera, Plomari, Ayassos, Eressos und Molivos (früher Molyvos). Plomari und Molivos sind Touristenzentren zusammen mit Ereso, das sehr besucht wird, da es der Geburtsort der Dichterin Sappho ist.
